Appropriation as a concept includes the notion of illegitimacy. Use of the term is thus absurd.

The romantisation of Scottish Highland culture can be laid at the door of novelist Sir Walter Scott. Finding a way to incorporate the tribal clans into mainstream British life was a huge issue at the time, with the Highlands acting as a petrie dish of revolution and rebellion. Arguably, the 'Highland-lite' culture he promoted saved a great deal of bloodshed because it showed Highlanders a way to be proud of their heritage whilst heading off to Uni to become the doctors and engineers of the Empire.

People in the position of power will use skewed arguments as well as their own arguments of prejudice to shut down people who are expressing ideas counter to the benefit of the present power structure. I believe that the male half of this podcast has not researched the people who are disenfranchised and their oppression significantly enough to speak objectively about this from an academic position.

Culture includes gender inequities. There has been a culture specific to men and specific to women.
