In Teutonic mythology the Middle Earth was wrapped round by the Midgard Serpent. Above this the gods built their mansions in the sky. Yet, curiously, in the lower world there lived all those people who had ceased to live.
Great article! It reminds me of some alchemical lore on the Ouroboros which states that the snake is innately healing but it also hold venom, so when it bites its own tail it it constantly healing but also constantly poisoning, stuck in a forever stasis, holding the tension of opposites. 🐍
This piece beautifully connects mythology and cultural beliefs, showing how snakes are revered across societies. The insights into the Midgard Serpent, Damballah, and Quetzalcoatl highlight their role as symbols of life, death, and the divine.

Thank you for this thought-provoking narrative that challenges us to see snakes as guardians, not just symbols of fear.
Some time ago I attended a talk by Swami Vidyadhishananda who runs the Hansadevas Fellowship which teaches Kriya yoga in the Vedic tradition.
According to teachings in the Vedic scriptures the Himalayas are held to hold a network of multidimensional access points affording instant access to all other material dimensions in this universe, and access points from all of them also naturally extend to this dimension, the one we are living in being just one of 14.
He spoke about yogis living in the area around his ashram in the Himalayas that he has spoken with who still today encounter and engage with a benevolent shape-shifting reptilian species who reside in inaccessible areas of the Himalayas that teaches yoga to humans, though as with German and Icelandic folklore, the understanding here is that like the Icelandic trolls who live inside boulders, or the German otherdimensional beings who live inside 'hollow hills', these advanced multidimensional yogis of another species pass through solid rock from one dimension into this one and use additional siddhic power to take on humanoid form here, and advanced human yogis acquire the same siddhis.
And when you look at many paintings of yogis several centuries old, they contain images of gatherings of yogis, some of whom have white skins, some of whom have pale golden complexion common to most Indians today, but some of these yogis depicted have sky blue skins. Swami Vidyadhishananda mentioned how this particular reptilian species always manifest with blue skins when they shape-change into human form to walk among human kind.
Beyond the 14 dimensions there are spiritual dimensions, these infinite dimensions being aspects of the living Godhead Himself, within which he has many eternal forms to more intimately relate to His expanded jiva spirit soul parts who reside there, all jiva spirit souls incarnated in all beings here in this present material dimension actually being of that same origin ultimately.
In their original spiritual positions, the jivas enjoy a fully awakened dovetailed state of consciousness with the infinite Godhead Supersoul in the various spiritual dimensions that enables them all to experience sarshti there (cosmic consciousness), as part of their relationship with the Godhead Supersoul.
The land of Gokula in India today is held to be intimately related to the infinite transcendental spiritual plane of Goloka, which is the highest of these dimensions and the one affording the most intimate and satisfying relationship with the Godhead Supersoul.
It is the belief among the Vaishnavas (devotees of Vishnu or Krishna) that if one passes on from this world in that land area whether as an advanced yogi or even after having been a housefly or an earthworm fortunate enough to be in that area at the time of their leaving this mortal coil, they are afforded instant restoration to their original state of consciousness and position in the highmost transcendental spiritual dimension of Goloka.
The transcendental spiritual dimension of Goloka is the Godhead Supersoul Himself throughout its entirety, and all souls there residing within Goloka and in all other spiritual and material dimensions are lower potency expansions of Him, and this is held to be the real nature of every single jiva spirit soul incarnate in all material dimensions in all of the 8,400,000 species including 400,000 humanoid species living in millions of temporal material universes too.
The transcendental spiritual dimension is fully conscious, beginningless, causeless, and eternal, comprised of an infinite number of souls as expansions from an infinite Godhead Supersoul, and this eternally exists before any material creation, so consciousness is naturally existing before the beginning of the manifestation of any material creation, there never has been any total vacuum or void or state of non-being or non-consciousness from which some notional 'Big Bang' came (the Big Bang theory in fact being one of the least likely of 11 dominant creation theories put forward by material scientists), and none of these theories even entertains the possibility of a preexisting transcendental spiritual reality underlying everything.
During deep meditation, one can directly experience this timeless eternal reality, though it would seem that mundanely-minded modern material scientists have yet to fathom this truth.

Jörmungandr is a monstrous sea serpent that encircles the Earth and bites its own tail. It is the thermo haline ocean currents.
