Western esoteric thought has its roots in the Late Antique period in the Eastern Mediterranean, where the East meets the West. Through the mingling of various traditions, schools of esoteric thought distinct from mainstream Christianity, such as Hermeticism, Gnosticism and Neoplatonism, were born.
