It's amazing how we humans can build up conceived images, myths and hallucinations, perceived altar egos and such like, into real time stories, merely by repeating them endlessly. This tendency stems from a fundamental biological fact, namely, the composition of human brain. We have many billions of neurons and hundred times more synapses. These are ceaselessly alive entities. Therein lies our imagination which is boundless. When we are not cerebrally active (consciously unaware), imagination may run wild in those of us who are prone to this tendency. Currents are always flowing in neural networks. Some contribute to imaginary mental pictures which we are not even aware of (subconscious and unconscious states). Dreams are in that category, except that we remember some dreams. When we are performing conscious mental acts like reading, learning, thinking, planning etc., pertinent neural networks contribute to memory, cognition and experiential and associative retention. This is the working-thinking world and is real. It has purpose, is motivated and is directed (life). It has some form of feeling or emotion attached to it. The rest is all imagination. Go build your myths and wild stories. Most authors call them books!

Fantastic breakdown of how these myths evolved across cultures. The Lincoln story is wild because he saw his double right after winning the election when stress levels were probably through the roof. Kinda makes sence that what ancient people called omens might just be neurological glitches from sleep deprivation or extreme stress. The connection between vardøger and modern autoscopy casesreally shows how universal this experience is.
